WPEngine vs Flywheel Hosting 2017 – find out which hosting company is best in 2017 for hosting your wordpress blog. In this review article we provide a feature by feature comparison.
WPEngine is one of the best hosting companies for managed WordPress installations. With a starting price of just $29 per month, this company runs every installation you can dream of on WordPress platforms. A number of high profile business owners, such as Balsamiq, HTC, and SoundCloud do business with the company, making them one of the more reputable choices around. Flywheel is a more recent competitor to the market, and is trying to give WPEngine a run for their money. But do they succeed? In our WPEngine vs Flywheel review, we’ll discuss the pros and cons, the features, and pricing of these two services.
Pros and Cons
WPEngine has a number of intensely good benefits. These include hassle free migration from one site host to the other, hosting speed, and money savings. Moving from Hostgator or similar hosts to WPEngine is easy. All you need to do is give WPEngine’s tech support the details of your login and they’ll take care of the whole thing for you.
Flywheel doesn’t include this level of support, unfortunately.
In terms of hosting speed, WPEngine boasts seriously fast loading time. In our testing comparing the speed of our old server and post-migration to WPEngine, the server response time was halved and scored 512ms as its ping time. It had originally had an average of 940 ms.
When we tried switching to Flywheel, we didn’t see this speed increase in site loading time.
As far as pricing goes, there are a number of pros for WPEngine on this front, as well: you’ll get full daily backups, malware scans, full programming support, data transfers, addon domains, and more as part of your initial WPEngine setup. With Flywheel, you only get support for one addon domain at a significantly higher price structure — which is $40 per month.
For WPEngine, perhaps the only con is that you’ll need to make a large leap in terms of cost when you switch from Personal to Professional as part of your pricing plan, but odds are you won’t need to switch at all.
Flywheel unfortunately has a number of cons, including slower load times, fewer pricing and plan comparison rates, and less informed customer service.
WPEngine has excellent customer support and tech help. Everyone you talk to, either by phone, email, or ticket support, is extremely knowledgable about WordPress installations. They’re also very passionate about their jobs, providing very fast email responses — and live chat responses that are basically instantaneous.
Since the company is also very well known now, you can quickly do a Google search and find access to their community-written help articles, tutorials and videos.
Flywheel has 24/7 customer support as well, but unfortunately they aren’t as helpful or knowledgeable, and tend to be less responsive on the whole. For this reason, they don’t receive the same high customer service rating that WPEngine does.
Features and Benefits
Other features of WPEngine include its worry-free policy, guaranteeing malware scans and daily backups so if your site gets hacked, they will fix the whole thing. They are very cost efficient, since you get so much for your money. They also provide LargeFS, a syncing service that works with Amazon’s S3 bucket; and Evercache, a caching technology that provides for great scalability and speed.
1-click restores are another excellent support option for WPEngine. You can use easy Snapshot Backups to make sure all your files are kept stored properly.
Sadly, Flywheel doesn’t offer this same amount of features. They have “good service” as many customers have reported, but it doesn’t blow users away the way WPEngine’s feedback proves. Instead, you’ll be paying more and getting less for your money, since you’re only getting access to the most basic features such as web space, cPanel, etc.
WPEngine takes the cake as our #1 hosting recommendation. In addition to their streamlined service, they also provide a number of features that you don’t find with other hosts — such as Evercache, a content delivery network, and LargeFS. Thanks to their customer service being extremely knowledgable and helpful, you can easily get all your problems fixed in just a matter of minutes. Flywheel falls short in comparison, offering only the most basic service as part of their plan and structure. For this reason, we recommend WPEngine with a rating of 5/5 stars.
